This Core Safety Group is built around helping to promote and achieve safety  as SAFETY is The Core of any business or family as we want to ensure that they are there for a long time.

The Core Safety Group is about just that.  We work with you, taking notes of your needs, processes and environment to develop an Energy Safety solution that fits.  It is not always the obvious solution that best suits the situation and keeping it simple is the key.  Our specialty is in electrical safety but we ensure that the wider safety issues are addressed as part of any solution we suggest.

In brief, you should know the following about us: our Group is built on a high level of experience gained working within Industry, Regulatory Environment and Standards Process. Our specialty is in the area of providing guidance to clients as to how to deal with any energy safety and regulatory issues they have.   We work alongside the client and their staff or contractors to assist bring the specialised knowledge to allow the work to be completed safely effectively and efficiently.

Our regular customers particularly value our honesty and solutions that fit their needs. Our business is located at Christchurch New Zealand but we will work where our clients need our services so will travel anywhere in New Zealand and overseas.”

Colin Murphy

Director and Technical Safety Advisor – The Core STI Limited. 

Colin's qualifications include being an Electrical Fitter, Electrician and Electrical Inspectors holding Practicing Licences in Australia and New Zealand.

Colin’s technical experience within the New Zealand Electrical Industry is extensive including:
  • Director and Technical Safety Advisor – The Core STI Limited (From 2008);
  • Senior Technical Advisor for the New Zealand Electrical and Gas Safety Regulators Office, Energy Safety where he was the Office specialist for Installations, Hazardous Areas and Animal Stunning and Conditioning Equipment. (From 1992 to 2008);
  • Apprentice-Tradesman-Electrical Supervisor within the New Zealand Electricity Generation Industry (1980-1992)

He is one of the technical representative for New Zealand on the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) committee TC 31 and sub committees dealing with hazardous area equipment, installation, maintenance and repair.  He also has sat for Energy Safety on a number of key Standards New Zealand and Joint Australian and New Zealand electrical safety committees as a representative for New Zealand Industry dealing with a wide range of subjects for many years.  Colin has continued his involvement in the development of Standards and now represents the Electrical Contractors Association (ECANZ) on the Joint Hazardous Area Committees.


As a specialist the field of safety of animal stunning and conditioning equipment Colin Chaired the New Zealand Committee 6116 who developed the worlds first electrical safety standard covering the selection, installation, maintenance and inspection of Animal Stunning and Conditioning Equipment (NZS 6116).

Colin maintains his links with the wider industry through membership of:


  • ECANZ (Electrical Contractors Association of New Zealand;
  • ESO (Electrical Safety Organisation);
  • IMC (Institute of Measurement and Control);
  • CBCC (Canterbury Business Chamber of Commerce).

Managing Director of Envirolight International 

Garry is a qualified avionics engineer, electrician, licensed electrical inspector, is IANZ Accredited has vast experience in the HSNO (Hazardous Substances and New Organisms) Legislation and is a Lawyer and JP.
He is currently a member of several Standards New Zealand and Joint Australian and New Zealand Standards committees, representing the Marine and Aviation Industry, specialising in the development of standards for hazardous areas. Including the committees that developed and maintain, AS/NZS 2381.1 and AS/NZS61241.14. Garry is also Chairman of the Joint committee MS/11 who look after the development of the hazardous area classification documents AS 2430.3 & AS/NZS 60079.10as well as being the Chair of the Standards New Zealand Hazardous Area Coordination Committee. 

Garry is also one of  the worlds leading experts in relation to electrical safety in the aviation industry and as such works extensively with the aviation industry to ensure the high standard of safety the industry has is maintained to meet its changing needs.
